Recommendation from Development Guide

Eliminate Elitism

The educational specialties and academic norms prevalent in scientific cultures unfortunately often result in extremely hierarchical cultures. Such cultures tend to encourage elitism with experts trying to outdo each other, and people without advanced degrees or in certain fields being treated as second-class citizens. Become a role model for democratic behavior. Treat everyone with equal courtesy and respect, and insist that your team members do too. Challenge norms that support inequality, such as the use of titles for medical doctors but not for other colleagues or persons without advanced degrees.
