Place the Project within the Organization Strategy
First, be sure you are clear on your organization’s overall business strategy. If you are in doubt, ask your manager or co-workers. When you think you have it, restate it back to them in two or three sentences or bullet points. It may sound simple, but this discipline will provide a clear context in which you should be able to fit any project or client assignment. The second step is to make sure you and your colleagues are clear on how any project or assignment you are working on will further, or be furthered by, the organization’s strategy. Always ask if it is not clear to you. Everyone in the organization needs to integrate these two facets. Your questions may help sharpen and clarify the thinking of your coworkers or reveal inconsistencies that will be important to resolve.
